Popular Interior Door Styles in 2022

Interior doors play an important, practical role in maintaining security and privacy throughout your home — but they can also have a big impact on design!

More and more, homeowners are starting to pay closer attention to which interior door style matches their desired aesthetic. If you’re one of them, you’ll want to pay close attention to these interior door style trends for 2022. Covering everything from styles to hardware, we’ll clue you in on some of the best ways to make your interior doors stand out this year.

5 Popular Interior Door Styles in 2022

Let’s start with interior door styles. While there are plenty of them available, there are a few that have recently spiked in popularity. We’ll take a look at five of them.

1. Shaker Doors

Shaker doors feature a smooth, level surface with thick raised borders. Their straight lines and subtle embellishments make them the perfect mix of simplicity and style, offering a sense of practicality without appearing too plain or basic.

Shaker doors are a great interior door style to implement throughout multiple rooms in your home, especially if you’re trying to match other clean-lined architectural detailing.

2. Sliding Barn Doors

While sliding barn doors got their name from rural farm buildings, they’ve also found their way into many suburban and urban homes! These doors are generally made from solid wood and slide from side to side instead of opening on hinges. And since they don’t have a wide-swinging radius like other interior doors, they’re proven space-savers.

Most commonly, sliding barn doors are used for kitchens and bathrooms within farmhouse-style homes. However, they’re recently starting to pop up within industrial or rustic-chic styles as well. This type of door is extremely versatile and can fit nearly anywhere depending on the material, color, and hardware you choose.

3. Glass & Frosted Glass Doors

Often called french doors, glass doors are the perfect choice for adding elegance to any room. They have the ability to open up space, let in light, and feature some of the most beautiful parts of your home. They’re not the most private choice, but for rooms like dining rooms and offices where that privacy isn’t always needed, they can be a beautiful addition.

Or, if you want to let the sun shine in without having to sacrifice privacy, you can opt for a frosted glass interior door. This option isn’t as transparent as regular glass, but still embodies the elegance and appeal of it.

4. Pocket Doors

Pocket doors function similarly to sliding barn doors, but they slide on rollers into a space, or “pocket,” that’s installed in the wall — completely removing the door from sight when open. They’re great space savers for rooms with limited floor space. Because of this, pocket doors are often seen used in pantries, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and closets.

5. Flush Doors

If you’re into minimalist design, flush interior doors might be your favorite! Usually made of wood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF), these doors feature a completely smooth surface free of raised borders and embellishments. Their simplicity not only makes them beautifully basic, but affordable as well!

Flush doors work well in homes with an overall minimalist design. However, they can also be great additions to rooms where the decor is rather “busy” — serving as a much-needed blank space amidst other patterns, colors, and decor.

Other 2022 Interior Door Trends

Aside from this year’s popular interior door styles, there are also some other trends related to interior door materials, colors, and hardware you’ll want to consider.

Materials

Door trends suggest that natural and contemporary materials will be the most common in 2022. In regards to natural materials, you’ll want to look at solid hardwoods. Although their beautiful grains usually come at a price, they’re durable enough to last you a lifetime.

In regards to contemporary materials, check out some of the glass-paned options. Their decorative elements will ensure your home displays a sense of modern, contemporary living.

Colors

Thinking about color palette? We’ve got you covered. You’ll want to choose from one of these options, depending on the overall style and aesthetic of your home:

  • Neutral – beige, gray, pale blue, or soft pink
  • Dark – black, navy blue, or deep brown
  • Bold – emerald green, royal blue, or coral

Hardware

And finally, the final touches you add with hardware can make all the difference. The right hardware can either match the style of your interior door, or it can turn a simple door into a statement piece. Here are the top three trends in terms of interior door hardware this year:

  • Brass materials
  • Long handles
  • Original, intricate designs
